POLYSOMNOGRAPHS AT VITALCARE

VitalCare Family Practice’s sleep lab in Prince George and Henrico, VA conducts in-lab sleep studies, also known as polysomnographs, to diagnose a variety of sleep disorders in children and adults. Undergoing an in-lab sleep study— and sleeping in an unfamiliar place— can be nerve-racking for many patients. Our team at VitalCare Family Practice is here to make you feel as comfortable as possible throughout every step of the process so you can get more restful, high-quality sleep.

TYPES OF SLEEP DISORDERS

In-lab sleep studies can help to diagnose a variety of sleep disorders for children and adults alike. Your doctor at VitalCare Family Medicine may recommend an in-lab sleep study if you or your child are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Snoring

  • Difficulty breathing during sleep

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness

  • Waking frequently during the night

  • Restless sleep

  • Sleeping too long or too little

In addition to the symptoms above, children with sleep disorders may also exhibit daytime symptoms such as irritability, behavioral issues, daytime sleepiness and difficulty focusing in school. In-lab sleep studies can help diagnose a variety of sleep disorders, including but not limited to:

  • Periodic limb movement disorder

  • Parasomnias (unusual behaviors during sleep, such as walking)

  • Chronic insomnia

  • Nocturnal seizures

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING AN IN-LAB SLEEP STUDY

At VitalCare Family Practice, we understand that it can be a daunting experience to be monitored while you sleep. We aim to thoroughly educate patients on what to expect during their sleep study so they can feel as prepared and relaxed as possible during their in-lab sleep studies.

When you first arrive at our sleep lab, our team will check you into your appointment and show you to your sleeping suite. Each patient will have their own bedroom and bathroom to use during the duration of the sleep study. Once our team has checked you into your sleeping suite, you can continue with your usual nighttime routine— brushing your teeth, changing into pajamas, etc.

Once you have prepared for sleep, our team will attach several sensors to your chest, head and legs and a clip on your finger to measure your blood oxygen. These sensors will allow our team to monitor several key metrics, such as heart rate, brain waves and more. The room is also equipped with a camera and audio equipment so our team can monitor your movements during sleep. If at any point you need assistance, our team will be able to hear you speak. You will then be instructed to fall asleep at your earliest convenience for monitoring. Depending on your symptoms, our team may also instruct you to use a CPAP machine to assist with breathing.

Following the sleep study, our team will help you remove sensors and other devices, and you will be free to leave. Our team will help you set up a follow-up appointment to discuss your sleep study results. When analyzing results, our team will take into account a variety of metrics to best diagnose your sleep disorder and develop a customized treatment plan.

WHAT DO IN-LAB SLEEP STUDIES MEASURE?

During an in-lab sleep study, our team will monitor several different metrics to diagnose a sleep disorder. By examining these different metrics together, our team can make a comprehensive diagnosis. These include but are not limited to:

  • Snoring and breathing patterns
  • Blood oxygen level
  • Heart rate and rhythm
  • Brain waves
  • Eye movements
  • Body movement and positioning

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

There are some steps you can take to ensure your in-lab sleep study is as relaxed and successful as possible. Prior to your sleep study, avoid consuming caffeine or alcohol after lunchtime, as these can interfere with sleep. Do not use lotions, gels or other products that could prevent the sensors from adhering to your skin. Additionally, you can bring the following items for yourself or your child for a comfortable experience:

  • Toiletries
  • Comfortable pajamas and/or slippers
  • A book, tablet or another entertainment device that you typically use before bedtime
  • A favorite blanket, pillow or stuffed animal
  • Medications (if any)
